Shutdown Support Resources

When the federal government shuts down, nonprofits often feel the effects first—delayed payments, rising demand, and heightened uncertainty about the future. At Mission + Strategy, we understand how heavy that can feel, and we’re here to offer guidance and resources to help you navigate disruption and safeguard your mission.

In times of crisis, Fred Rogers—known to so many simply as Mr. Rogers—shared advice from his mother: “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” This wisdom reminds us that being a helper and being helped are part of the same virtuous cycle. The two cannot—and should not—be untangled. Each role gives us perspective into the other, deepening our empathy and reminding us of our shared humanity.

Taking action, even in small and practical ways, not only strengthens your organization but also restores hope. You are not alone—there are always helpers, and through your work, you are one of them.

Free Tools to Support Your Shutdown Response

Below is a collection of free resources to support your organization’s crisis planning and response during the government shutdown. We’ll continue to update this page, so please check back regularly for new resources. If you have tools or materials that have been helpful to your organization during times of crisis, we’d love for you to share them with us at jcaribeaux@missionplusstrategy.org.

Available Cash Stress Test

This Available Cash Stress Test is a simple tool to help your organization see when cash might run short during the government shutdown. It does not distinguish between restricted and unrestricted funds, and it is not a replacement for formal financial reporting. Instead, it provides a quick estimate of the cash you have on hand and highlights if—and when—you may run out. Use it to test different scenarios, like a delayed grant or lower-than-expected donations, so you can plan ahead and avoid surprises.
